WRESTLING ADVISORY MEETING
4/3/08
Attending were: Mike Thingstad, Travis Lemar, Dave Dougherty and Scott Knowlen
Recommended A & B items:
- Record only weigh-ins to the NWCA if tournament program “interfacing” isn’t in place
- Re-instate the Spirit Award to help promote better sportsmanship
- The focus would be mainly on each school’s coaches, wrestlers, crowd and cheerleaders
- Region managers will secure one adult from his/her region to serve on the committee
- Wrestling Advisory Committee members will assist the NDHSAA in updating the guidelines used in the past
- That each school receive 5 coaches’ passes
- Rationale; coaches are employed by the school and are involved all year
- Schools will pay for additional coaches
Recommended B items:
- Adjust the hydration formula for kids who are over hydrated.
- Allow a wrestler to wrestle up one weight class and allow him/her to return to his/her weight class for the next meet
- Allow 30 matches for JrHi
- When a post season state dual team qualifier is used in regions, wrestlers can have a maximum of 40 matches prior to that tournament making the individual competition regulation similar to a post season tournament in other sports
- Allow one head coach to act as a recorder at the seeding meeting (a good experience for those who haven’t served)
Recommended A items:
- Score and place 8 wrestlers at the state tournament
- Consistency with Class B
- More opportunities for quality wrestlers to achieve “State Place Winner”
- It will account for a more accurate representation of the team
- Greater incentive for the wrestler to “finish strong” on the final day
Discussion Items:
- Indicated disappointment that wrestling was one of the activities omitted from the Centennial Logo
- Ways to make weight classes work for the large schools and small schools. Dave C sent further information to the NFHS rules committee for consideration
- The possibility of a long term contract for the state program to reduce the chance for error
- Discussed the structure of the state tournament.
Administrative:
- Review the consecutive day allowance for wrestlers on the descent plan (in between weight classes)
- Allow a little more time for skin checks and weigh-ins. There is plenty of time…..the afternoon break could be shortened.
- Thursday - skin checks at 8:00, weigh-ins at 8:30 & wrestle at 10:30
- Friday – weigh-in 8:00 & wrestle at 9:30
- Saturday – weigh-ins at 8:00 & wrestle at 9:30
- Class B Team Dual Pairings:
- 2009
1-1 vs. 4-2

Recommendations to NFHS:
- Provide 14 weights with a 12-weight option to accommodate large schools and small schools. A possibility is:
- Twelve classes could be 110, 118, 125, 133, 141, 149, 157, 165, 174, 184, 197 and 285.
- Fourteen classes could just add 103 and 215
State Tournament:
- State tournament: assigned (labeled) chairs for statisticians, tappers & trainers
- Address floor access for statisticians (holding area?)
